Use separator plates and pillars. Most dramatic method of tiered cake assembly-two, three or more single cakes towered together.
 
2-Plate and Pillar Construction #11. Set tiers on separator plates, which are 2 in. larger in diameter than cakes.
 
2-Plate and Pillar Construction #22. Dowel rod cakes and position separator plates on tiers with feet up. (Note: separator plates connected by pillars must always be the same size in diameter).
 
2-Plate and Pillar Construction #33. Position pillars over feet on separator plates.
 
2-Plate and Pillar Construction #44. Carefully set cake plate on pillars. Continue adding tiers this way.
 
2-Plate and Pillar Construction #55. This is the classic 2-plate and pillar construction.
